What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a condition that results from irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is not only the longest, but also the largest nerve in the body. It travels from the lower spine, through the pelvis, and down the legs to the feet. The irritation of the nerve can result in pain up and down that nerve. Pain may feel like throbbing, burning, or tingling, and numbness can result, as well. In advanced cases, sciatica can result in disruption of function in the lower limbs and digestive tract.
Sciatica can have many causes. Among the most common are misalignments and inflammation in the lower back, where the sciatic nerve’s roots emerge from the spine. These can be the result of injuries to the spinal discs, which cushion and space out the bodies of the vertebrae. Although less common, inflammation of the muscles deep in the pelvis can also pinch the sciatic nerve.
Class IV Laser Therapy
Class IV laser therapy uses red and near-infrared wavelengths to provide therapeutic relief for a variety of conditions, including sciatica. The laser increases circulation, reduces pain, decreases swelling, and promotes healing. It also prevents scar tissue from forming. Laser treatment can help reduce the irritation of the nerves by stimulating the cells to release more energy used for tissue regeneration.
Laser therapy can be done on its own or as a complementary treatment to other forms of care. Some structural treatments cannot be conducted until after inflammation has been reduced through means such as lasers, and some will work better if swelling can be kept under control. To find out if you are a good candidate for this type of therapy, you should come in for an evaluation.
